DRAFT Photo Contest Guidelines

Click here for a DRAFT version of the rules for this year's SLORRM Photo Contest that will culminate in revealing the winner(s) at the Central Coast Railroad Festival this Fall. We're fairly certain there will be changes, but this should give photographers a good idea of how it's going to work. Feel free to send comments on these draft guidelines to: Conductor@CCRRF.com

CCRRF Call for Speakers 2022

The Central Coast Railroad Festival is looking for a few speakers to present talks at the SLO Railroad Museum on Saturday, October 8, 2022 during the Festival. We're particularly looking for talks about railroad photography and talks about the history of the SLO Railroad Museum and the Southern Pacific Freighthouse built in 1894 (home of the Museum). If you'd like to be a speaker, drop a line to Conductor@CCRRF.com with a brief description of what you would talk about. Talks should be in the range of 30-45 minutes. Swanton Pacific Railroad Update

The Swanton Pacific Railroad is still working out the details of rebuilding facilities after the CZU Lightning Complex Fire of August 2020. SPRR was gifted to Cal Poly University in 1993, so many financial decisions are in the hands of the university. That said, SPRR hopes to schedule volunteer work weekends this summer, along with the annual "Work Week" before this Fall. Even with limited facilities, maintenance tasks never end. All updates and scheduled events will be posted on SPRR's Facebook page and YouTube channel: Facebook, YouTube

Magic of Scale Model Railroading at the
California State Railroad Museum

Open now! This new exhibit at the CA State Railroad Museum is literally Smithsonian quality, and traces the history of model railroading from its inception to today, as well as showing non-modelers how a train layout is built, pieces of several finished layouts, and the various tools and models of the great hobby. April 2021 article: here.

Familiar with LOSSAN?

From LOSSAN's website: The 351-mile Los Angeles - San Diego - San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor (LOSSAN Corridor) travels through a six-county coastal region in Southern California and is the second busiest intercity passenger rail corridor in the United States and the busiest state-supported Amtrak route. The LOSSAN Corridor service includes 41 stations and more than 150 daily passenger trains, with an annual ridership of nearly 3 million on Amtrak Pacific Surfliner intercity trains and 5 million on Metrolink and COASTER commuter trains. This recent article, "Surfliner's up!" in New Times, discusses a new interim director and other current issues for passenger trains along the coast.

California Central Coast Museums

Wikipedia has a handy list of museums from Santa Cruz County to Ventura County. One can sort the list in a handful of ways (by City, by County, by Type, etc.). It's here.

Vintage Train Stations Southern California

KCET published an article about eight vintage train stations in Southern California: LA Union Station, San Diego, San Bernardino, Barstow, San Luis Obispo, Glendale, San Juan Capistrano, and Fullerton. A PDF of the article is here.

South Coast Railroad Museum at the
Historic Goleta Depot

This Museum/Depot in Goleta is open Saturdays and Sundays, Noon to 4:00 pm. From their website: "This museum focuses on the history, technology, and adventure of railroading. Special emphasis is placed on the railroad's contributions to local history, on the Southern Pacific Railroad, and on the key historical role of the railroad depot in rural community life across America. The museum centerpiece is Goleta Depot, a country railroad station house built by the Southern Pacific in 1901 during completion of the Coast Route joining San Francisco and Los Angeles." The Friends of the SMVRR participated in their Railroad Days a couple times; some photos are here.

Area Railroading Opportunities

There's a plethora of railroading going on in our area (broadly speaking, in some cases). Check out this Index of Area Railroading. Be sure to check with any of interest to you to verify their open status and schedules.
