Railroad Festival: Just 7 Weeks Away!

It'll be here in no time! While some adjustments may be made between now and then, you can see flesh on the bones of this October's Central Coast Railroad Festival. The overall Festival schedule is here. The schedule at the SLO Railroad Museum is here.

October 14th Sunset Wine/Rail Excursion

Wine/Rail Excursions return to the SLO Railroad Museum! This first-up trip will leave by van around 11am from the Museum and arrive at the Santa Barbara Wine Collective about 12:30pm. Following the wine tasting, participants will have free time in Santa Barbara to further explore the Funk Zone, Stearns Wharf, lower State Street, etc. until departing on the Amtrak Surfliner at about 5:45pm with an arrival into San Luis Obispo at about 8:45pm. Details are here.

Two Garden Railroads Highlighted

Two central coast garden (G-scale) railroads were highlighted recently by the Facebook group Model Railroads of Southern California. One was the Cascade Peak & Buena Vista Railway in Santa Margarita, and the other was the A&M Railroad in Santa Maria. Both railroads are members of the Central California Coast Garden Railroad Society.

Photo Contest Deadline: 4 Weeks Away

The deadline to submit your photos to the SLO Railroad Museum's 2023 Photo Contest is September 15, 2023 - about 4 weeks away! Details for the contest are here.

Swanton Moving to Pacific Coast Railroad

We reported last issue that much of the equipment from the Swanton Pacific Railroad is moving to the Pacific Coast Railroad at Santa Margarita Ranch. That move is actually happening now and you can follow along to some degree at the Pacific Coast Railroad Facebook page.

Video Tour of Train Mountain

Here's a fun, 15-minute video tour of Train Mountain, a 2,200 acre, 7.5" gauge railroad in Chiloquin, Oregon with 37 miles of track. It's probably the largest model railroad layout in that gauge. The video is by DownieLive, a travel videographer your editor has come to appreciate. The video is here.

Track Safety Basics

Operation Lifesaver makes available the basic ruless when it comes to safety around railroads, especially at roadway/rail intersections. Check them out here.

The Real Blues Jam SouthWest

Enjoy the Blues? Ted Waterhouse, the musician who will be playing on the platform of the SLO Railroad Museum for this year's Railroad Festival (on Saturday), will be leading a Blues group at The Siren, 900 Main Street, Morro Bay on Tuesday, August 22nd and Tuesday, September 26th from 7pm to 10pm each night. If you're a Blues player, here's a chance to play along. See Ted's website for details.

Heritage Day at Dana Adobe

Don't miss Heritage Day at the Dana Adobe and Cultural Center in Nipomo on September 30, 2023! While you're marking your calendars, you might also set aside December 9, 2023 for the annual Dana Gala. While you're at the Adobe, don't miss the Railroad Trail that follows the path of the historic Pacific Coast Railway. See the Dana Adobe website for details about both events.

ProDriver Challenge by Operation Lifesaver

From their website: "Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI), the nonprofit public safety education and awareness organization, has updated its ProDriver Challengee Learning program helping drivers prepare to make safe choices when navigating railroad crossings along their routes. The ProDriver Challenge offers an interactive online learning experience for CDL drivers, putting users at the controls of a virtual dashboard where they make important safety decisions as the driver of a box truck or 18-wheeler. With its fresh makeover, the ProDriver Challenge offers an immersive and dynamic online learning experience. Drivers can access the eLearning at "oli.org/prodriver." An article on the topic is here.

2023 CCRRF Participants

Area Railroading Opportunities

There's a plethora of railroading going on in our area (broadly speaking, in some cases). Check out this Index of Area Railroading. Be sure to check with any of interest to you to verify their open status and schedules.

Want Your News/Event Promoted?

Do you have a Central Coast railroad-related event or news item to add to our next broadcast email? It's free! And it doesn't have to be part of the Festival itself (could be any time throughout the year). Email the details to: addevent@ccrrf.com. The next issue will likely be in a month or so. See the Announcements Index for past e-blasts.
