Vote SLO Railroad Museum "Best of SLO"

We'd love to have you vote for the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum as "Best Museum" in the 38th Annual Readers Poll by New Times. March 18th at 5pm is the deadline to vote. Start here.

St. Patrick's Day at Oceano Depot

How about a Pancake Breakfast at the Oceano Depot this Sunday, March 17th, 8-11am. Tickets are $8 and include pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, and orange juice. Mimosas and Mock-mosas are available. Prizes, too! This is a fundraiser for the Oceano Depot Restoration Project.

3rd Danny the Diesel Locomotive Book

The third book in the Danny the Diesel Locomotive series is now available on the SLO Railroad Museum's website. The book is titled Danny the Diesel Locomotive Comes Home. These books are by Glen Matteson and are intended for children about three to six years of age. The book is available as a PDF for free and includes both English and Spanish; donations are appreciated.

SLO Railroad Museum's Spring Newsletter

The Spring 2024 issue of Coast Mail (#87), the SLO Railroad Museum's quarterly newsletter, has been published. It's available on the Museum's Newsletter page.

Norgrove Railway Unveils O&K #8

Norgrove Railway recently unveiled its latest restoration project: Orenstein & Koppel #8, a 1938 0-4-0T steam locomotive. They've been meticulously reassembling all the restored, rebuilt, and new components back onto the locomotive. With more new parts on their way, it will soon be ready to steam up. News from the Overfair Pacific Railroad

The Overfair Pacific Railroad (was the Swanton Pacific Railroad in Davenport, CA) has a new home at the Historic Santa Margarita Ranch. Though we have a long road ahead of us and intense restorations in our future, we look forward to seeing you all at Reedley Railfest (March 15-17), Best of the West (May 24-26), and at the Central Coast Railroad Festival in October. Please stop in at our display to learn more about the Overfair's unique history and how you can be part of its future. Website: OverfairPacific.com.

Santa Maria: Japanese Community Stories

The Santa Maria Valley Historical Society Museum presents "Japanese Community Stories Past and Present" at the Museum (616 S. Broadway) on March 23, 2024 at 11:30am. The Museum has been a Festival Participant for a number of years as they have a number of SMV Railroad and Captain Hancock historical displays - check those out while you're there.

Family Day at Dallidet Gardens

It's Family Day at Dallidet Gardens on Sunday, April 7th, 11am to 3pm. Adults $25, Kids $10. Come on down for a great day of fun, food (lunch is included!), music, and family-friendly activities including a garden scavenger hunt, garden art projects, face painting, vegetable mini-gardens to take home and grow, petting animals, and games galore. While you're there, don't miss the downtown SLO Street Railcar from the late 1800s.

Bakersfield Layout: Bob Chaparro Photos

Bob Chaparro recently took a few photos of a model railroad layout by Al Sandrini in Bakersfield. Formerly known as the Dixie Creek Central (HOn30), it's now the Scotts Bay & Eastern (HO). See the photos here (on Facebook).

Tehachapi Train Show March 23-24

The Tehachapi Loop Railroad Club and the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District will hold a Spring Train Show in the Aspen Builders Activity Center, 410 West "D" Street, Tehachapi, CA. Hours are 10am-5pm on Saturday and 10am-3pm on Sunday. Operating train layouts will include: O, Z, On30, and HO gauges with special guest clubs including ZoCal Z Scale Modules, Orange County "N" Gineers (a CCRRF favorite), Southern Nevada N-Trak, and Lancaster North Western Club. Bake sale and vendor tables, too. Admission is FREE. While you're in Tehachapi, don't miss the Tehachapi Railroad Depot Museum (some 2023 photos), Kohnen's Country Bakery next door, and, of course, the Tehachapi Loop (photos from a 2004 field trip to the Loop).

2024 UPHS Convention in Perris, CA

The Union Pacific Historical Society (UPHS) will hold its 2024 convention in Perris, CA, May 8-11, at the Southern California Railway Museum. Lodging will be at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in nearby Menifee, CA. The museum will operate historic equipment and stage photo opportunities day and night. Plans include field trips to the Rail Giants Museum in Pomona and the March Air Force Base in Riverside. Details are here.

Niles Canyon Railway

The Niles Canyon Railway is just a little over 3 hours drive north from SLO. They've got a museum to visit and trains and speeders to ride. One of their locomotives, Clover Valley Lumber Co. #4, just celebrated 100 years of operation! Here's their About page.
